AIG Update

Recently there has been some unsettling news regarding AIG (American International Group), our country’s largest insurance holding company. We want to reassure you that the problems faced by AIG are specific to the parent holding company and did not at any time impact the ability of its affiliate companies, such as American General. At no time was the integrity of your life insurance policy under question. Insurance is a state regulated industry and insurance companies are required to meet financial standards which assure proper investment quality of their assets, reserves and surplus to meet their policy obligations.

As with other financial organizations, AIG has experienced significant financial losses due to a variety of mortgage related investments. This has affected the financial liquidity of the AIG parent organization and caused concern among its policyholders, employees, agents and the general public. The Federal Government recently announced a loan to AIG that will provide the financial liquidity for the continued operation and stability of AIG parent organization. Part of the strategy of AIG’s parent organization will be to sell off some of its $1 trillion of assets to create the liquidity it needs and to pay back the government loan. In all, the news is good, and more specifically, American General is well positioned to meet all their financial obligations now and into the future.
